Liver Transplantation

Liver transplantation is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased liver is replaced with a healthy liver from a deceased or living donor. The procedure is typically performed on patients with end-stage liver disease, liver cancer, or other liver-related conditions that have not responded to other forms of treatment.

Here are the steps involved in a liver transplantation:

    1. Pre-transplant evaluation: The patient must undergo a thorough evaluation to determine whether they are a suitable candidate for a liver transplant. The evaluation will typically include blood tests, imaging studies, and a review of the patient’s medical history.

    2. Donor selection: The liver transplant team will work to identify a suitable liver donor. In some cases, a liver from a deceased donor may be used. In other cases, a portion of a healthy liver from a living donor may be used.

    3. Surgery: The patient will undergo general anesthesia before the surgery begins. The surgeon will make an incision in the abdomen and remove the damaged liver. The new liver will be carefully placed into the patient’s body and connected to the blood vessels and bile ducts.

    4. Recovery: After the surgery, the patient will be monitored closely in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) for a few days. They will be given medications to prevent rejection of the new liver, manage pain, and prevent infection.

    5. Follow-up care: The patient will require ongoing follow-up care to ensure that the new liver is functioning properly and to monitor for signs of rejection or complications. This may include regular blood tests, imaging studies, and appointments with the transplant team.

    6. Lifestyle changes: The patient will need to make significant lifestyle changes after the transplant, such as taking immunosuppressive medications for the rest of their life, following a healthy diet, and avoiding alcohol and drugs.
