Foreign body removal is a medical procedure that involves the removal of an object or substance that has entered the body and is causing harm or discomfort. If the foreign body is in a life-threatening location, such as the airway, emergency foreign body removal may be necessary.
Evaluate the situation: Determine the severity of the obstruction and the patient’s level of consciousness. If the patient is unable to speak, cough or breathe, it is an emergency.
Call for emergency help: Contact emergency medical services (EMS) immediately, especially if the foreign body is in a critical location such as the throat or lungs.
Begin first aid: If the person is conscious and coughing, encourage them to keep coughing to help dislodge the foreign body. If the person is unable to cough, lean them forward and deliver up to five sharp blows to the back between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. This may dislodge the object.
Perform abdominal thrusts: If the person is still unable to breathe, perform abdominal thrusts. Stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist, and make a fist with one hand. Place the thumb side of your fist just above the person’s navel and below the breastbone. Grasp your fist with your other hand and pull inward and upward. Repeat until the object is dislodged or EMS arrives.
Follow EMS instructions: Once EMS arrives, they may provide further assistance and transport the patient to the hospital for further treatment.
